What Do You Long For?
“Every person has a longing to be significant; to make a contribution; to be a part of something noble and purposeful.”
- John Maxwell
Three different times in the 119th Psalm, the Psalmist expresses a longing for a deep connection with God and His Word:
Psalm 119:20 “My soul is consumed with longing for your law at all times.”
Psalm 119:81 “My soul faints with longing for your salvation, but I have put my faith in your word.”
Psalm 119:131 “I open my mouth and pant, longing for your commands.”
The Psalmist recognized there is no greater purpose in life than to be connected to the Father and His Word, His instructions for our lives; for when we are connected to Him, we will accomplish more than we could ever accomplish on our own and be a part of something far bigger than ourselves.
When we humble ourselves before the Lord, He fills us with the power of His Holy Spirit to accomplish more than we could ever ask or imagine.
American inspirational author, Orison Swett Marden wrote, “The Creator has not given you a longing to do that which you have no ability to do.’
And when we long for God and His Word before and above all else, we discover our significance, our value and the reason for our existence - why we are here on this earth.
As the Psalmist writes in Psalm 42:1,
“As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you my God.”
May we long for God and His purpose in our lives, and in doing so, find our value and our significance, as children of the Most High God. And, when we do, we will accomplish more for Him than we ever dreamed possible.
