Sermon Notes

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God
- Romans 3:23

As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one.
- Romans 3:10

We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
- Isaiah 53:6

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
- Romans 5:8

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
- Romans 6:23

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are inChrist Jesus
- Romans 8:1

“He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”
- 1 Peter 2:24

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!
- 2 Corinthians 5:17

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
- Romans 8:38-39

Sermon Questions

Scriptures: Romans 3:23, 3:10; Isaiah 53:6; Romans 5:8, 6:23, 8:1; 1 Peter 2:24; 2 Corinthians 5:17; Romans 8:38-39

  1. Pastor Josh posed this idea that we are living a spiritual life of writing "bounced checks." What did he mean? How did this idea resonate with you and the way your life is going?
  2. Read Romans 3:23 and Romans 3:10. Have you wrestled with these statements when applied to you? What brought you to acceptance?
  3. What do Romans 5:8 and 6:23 say to you about God's willingness/ability to help you pay your debts? Have you been afraid to ask Him for help? As Jesus hung on the cross, how can it be that God is the "most amazing Dad ever," as Pastor Josh described Him?
  4. Read 1 Peter 2:24, 2 Corinthians 5:17, and Romans 8:38-39. Which verse speaks to you the most? What do these verses tell you about God and the relationship He wants to have with you?
  5. Jesus said in John 19:30, “It is finished.” Pastor Josh explained that there were 3 things Jesus finished: 1) Sin. 2) Shame. 3) Separation (from God). Does it give you hope to know you can’t do it but you know the One who can? How do you feel knowing that it is finished for you? Moving forward, how can you live your life in a way that shows you are free from these burdens?

The angel said, “Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ’He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you to Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.”
