Day 38: Psalm 36

It is impossible to truly know ourselves, why we are in this world, and what we are to do with our time here apart from connecting to Jesus.

If you think about a pen, you can do many things with it, you can use it as a paper weight, you can throw it if you’d like, but it really has one design and purpose. The same is true with you. You can do a lot of things with your life, but your one purpose is to come into relationship with God so you can see the rest of your life and the world through Jesus. Once we enter into relationship with Jesus, He becomes the light that helps us see and interpret everything else. Without knowledge of Him, life is random. Somehow I’ve made it through this entire Psalm devotional without a C.S. Lewis quote, (almost!) but I can’t help but think of his words, “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.”

I think this is why the Psalmist has come to such adoration of God. He realizes he can’t see without Him. Notice this:

Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens, Your faithfulness to the skies. Your righteousness is like the highest mountains, Your justice like the great deep. You, Lord, preserve both people and animals. How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings. They feast on the abundance of your house; you give them drink from your river of delights. For with you is the fountain of life; in Your light we see light. Psalm 36:5-9

I love the idea that “in Your light we see light.” The woman at the well sees herself because she sees Jesus. Now, she can see everything else. Let us see everything is life, and in death, in the light. Let us see everything in bear markets and bull markets, in the light.

Let us look at the light within us today, in the light. In His light, we can see light.
