All And Every
If you could have any superpower, what would you want?
For me, it would definitely be the ability to fly. I mean, with the gas prices, come on, it would save tons of money. But not only that, life would be so efficient to be able to get somewhere really fast.
What would you want as your superpower?
As we journey with Christ toward Easter, we see that Jesus did many miracles.
To name a few in Matthew 9:
Jesus healed a woman who suffered from constant bleeding verse 22
Jesus raised the official’s daughter who died verse 25
Jesus healed two blind men verse 30
Jesus cast out a demon-possessed man verse 33
You can say Jesus had the superpower to do miracles. However, when we read Matthew 9 in context, verses 35-38 shows the real miracle.
35 Jesus traveled through all the towns and all villages of that area, teaching in the synagogues and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom. And he healed every kind of disease and every illness.
36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.
37 He said to his disciples, “The harvest is great, but the workers are few.
38 So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.”
This passage is saying Jesus desires more workers. But I had to ask, what kind of workers? Does Jesus desire workers who can heal and do miracles like Him? Perhaps. But it is unlikely anyone can go into ALL the towns and ALL the villages, healing EVERY kind of disease and EVERY illness.
The key focus here are workers who are more like Christ. Namely, ones who can see the crowd and have compassion.
I have personally found this to be a challenge in my life. It requires an act of God, a miracle of God, for me to see anyone and everyone and have compassion 100% of the time. This is why I believe Jesus is the only amazing and awesome One because He is an All and Every Savior. He is the only one who can see the crowd and have compassion 100% of the time, every time, all the time. Only Jesus can do this.
Furthermore, I believe the greatest miracle of Jesus is His ability to change someone’s eternity through salvation and to change our hearts to have compassion.
Friends, are you like me, where you can’t have compassion all the time, every time?
…that person who cut you off on the road
…that coworker who pushes all your buttons
…your children who keeps breaking all the rules
…your neighbor who doesn’t keep their lawn clean
It’s okay… we are not Jesus. I am not perfect, and you are not as well. And this is why we absolutely need Christ and need to go to Him for help.
Pray today, “Lord, I am not like you. But I want to be. Help me, change me, fill me with your compassion so that I can be a worker for your harvest. I want to love like you. Help me to grow in compassion!”
It starts with earnest prayer, verse 38 says. Ask the Lord of the harvest. He will then work through you to bring salvation in others by changing your heart to have compassion.
This is a spiritual superpower we all need. And slowly but surely, we will get there! Amen.
