Big, Big God
God dwells in His creation and is everywhere indivisibly present in all His works. He is transcendent above all His works even while He is immanent within them.
- AW Tozer
When we first moved to San Diego, our children got involved in Pop Warner football and cheer. I’d drive them and our neighbors, Vinnie and Vonnie, to practice four nights a week. As soon as we’d get in the car, Vinnie would want me to play “Big, Big House” by Audio Adrenaline on the radio. So we’d drive down I-15, convertible top down, all singing at the top of our lungs:
I don't know where you lay your head or where you call your home
I don't know where you eat your meals or where you talk on the phone
I don't know if you got a cook, a butler or a maid
I don't know if you got a yard with a hammock in the shade.
I don't know if you got some shelter, say a place to hide
I don't know if you live with friends, in whom you can confide
I don't know if you got a family, say a mom or dad
I don't know if you feel love at all, but I bet you wish you had
CHORUS:
Come and go with me to my Father's house
Come and go with me to my Father's house
It's a big, big house with lots and lots of room
A big, big table with lots and lots of food
A big, big yard where we can play football
A big, big house, It’s my Father's house!
All I know is a big ole house, with rooms for everyone
All I know is lots a land where we can play and run
All I know is you need love and I've got a family
All I know is you’re all alone so why not come with me?
Do you see it? I know this is just a song, but I sometimes envision myself in that BIG, BIG house with LOTS and LOTS of food! (I don’t think much about playing football, though.) I read Psalm 139 this week and thought about the “bigness” of our God. You guessed it, that song popped into my head! I kept reading the psalm, meditating on the words, listening for what God wanted to say. So think with me about our BIG, BIG God:
God Is Omniscient (vs 1-6)
God knows EVERYTHING. David says, “you have searched me and known me” and “you discern my thoughts from afar.” To ‘search’ is to examine intimately, and the word for ‘know’ in Hebrew, yada, means to know by observation, to care for and to instruct. Think about that: God knows what you are doing and what you are thinking! We can’t hide anything from Him.
God is Omnipresent (vs. 7-12)
God is EVERYWHERE. “If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.” We have God’s personal presence. He is with you now AND He can be with someone else, and still be with you at the same time.
God Is Omnipotent (v.13-18)
God is ALL POWERFUL. God’s “works are wonderful.” He “knit me together in my mother’s womb.” God spoke, and the world came into being. He created the heavens and the earth and every living thing.
Because God is all powerful, everywhere and knows everything, take a few minutes to sit in the “bigness” of Him. Invite Him to (v. 23-24) “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.”
And when you’ve finished, pull up this song and sing along today with me in praise to our BIG, BIG, GOD!
