Build Your Life
g. Despite being pursued, threatened with death and destruction, David wasn’t disappointed. Why?
Through many battles, David had learned that it wasn’t IF he was in control, but WHOSE control He was living under!
So let's look at verses 1-3:
I love you, Lord, my strength.
The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;
my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise,
and I have been saved from my enemies.
David knew who God was. He was his strength, rock, fortress, deliverer, shield, salvation and stronghold. But David had to surrender to allow God to take over. David also was aware of what God had done for him. David said:
He heard me (v. 6), He rescued me (v. 9), He scattered my foes (v. 9-14),
He took me and drew me out of deep water (v. 16), He supported me (v. 18), He delighted in me (v. 19) and He rewarded me (v 20).
The truth is that I’ve lived long enough to learn that I absolutely have no control over anything. I can make my plans, but the Lord directs my paths. So the question is no longer if I’m in control, but under whose direction and control am I building my life?
In verses 35-36, David writes:
You make your saving help my shield,
And your right hand sustains me;
Your help has made me great.
You provide a broad path for my feet,
So that my ankles do not give way.
On the margin of my Bible, I’ve written, “My weakness, His strength,” as a reminder that I’d much rather build my life on the solid rock of Jesus than on the sinking sand of my control.
Friend, what about you? We face battles every day in our jobs, homes, and with our families. When we build our lives on what we want to control, it can destroy us. Take time to read through this Psalm and make your own list: Who is God in your life? Is He in control?
Build your life on a strong foundation!
