God Is Good
"No one is good, only God."
- Jesus, Mark 10:18 (MSG)
"The fact that I live, breathe, move, love and am loved today… can only be explained
by one thing -- God is good!"
- A Pastor
Recently, my son-in-law, Nate, was sitting in a prayer circle of people at 6:30 in the morning at church.
As the leader taught on the meaning and significance of prayer, Nate began to "nod off." The next thing he knew, the person next to him elbowed him, woke him up, and said, "Nate, do you have any prayer requests?" Embarrassed, Nate replied, "Yes… that I get more sleep." As everyone chuckled, Nate began to apologize to the teacher for falling asleep when she stopped him and asked, "Do you have children?" "Yes," Nate said, "I have 3 young girls." She smiled and said, "When one of your daughters falls asleep on your chest, how do you feel?" "Good!" Nate replied, "Really good!" "Listen," she explained, "That's exactly how your Heavenly Father feels when you fall asleep in His Presence - He feels good… really good… because, like you, He's a good, good Father!"
Now, this is not an invitation for you to fall asleep during one of Pastor Jared's messages…. But it is a profound endorsement of God's essential character. As Chris Tomlin sang, He's “a good, good Father!" Say that with me..."God is good! All the Time!"
Throughout the Bible, God reveals Who He is.
In 66 books, written over 1600 hundred years, 40 human authors were supernaturally inspired by the Holy Spirit to record, not an instruction manual about what to do, but an autobiography about Who God is! The Bible is primarily about Someone to know...not about something to do!
And one of the first things the Bible says is...God is good!
"Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good;" 1 Chronicles 16:34
"Taste and see that the LORD is good;" Psalm 34:8
"Give thanks to the LORD… for He is good and His love is eternal." Psalm 100:4-5
"You are good, and You do what is good;" Psalm 119:68
When Moses pleaded with God, "Please, show me your glory..." he was asking to see God for Who He really is. "Show me as much as I can stand, Lord." So what did God show Moses? Exodus 33:19-20 gives us God's response:
"I will cause all My Goodness to pass in front of you and I will proclaim the name Yahweh before you."
- Exodus 33:19
Moses wanted to see God as He is and God showed him something so wonderful that it caused the skin of Moses' face to glow with the radiance of God's goodness.
Do you need to experience God's Goodness in some area of your life today? There's more than enough bad, sad, and mad, in your world and mine. Psalm 145:9 says that the "LORD is Good to everyone..." Who is included in the word "everyone"? You are!
Listen… Even if you've fallen asleep in some critical area of your life… even with all your baggage, all your junk, all your hang-ups… God says, "I want to be good to you! Not because you deserve it, but because there's something about Who I am that loves to overflow in good and extravagant ways to you!"
So... Do a Moses: Ask God to show you His goodness where you need it most! Hey...Your child knows..."God is great! God is good!” What about you?!
AMEN
