Let Us Be Light

Why is it that certain moments, certain years feel heavier than others?

Why is it that certain movies, although containing no physical weight, are often described as heavy while a show on the Bravo network might be categorized as light?

We use light and heavy to describe experiences. This year probably feels heavy to you. You might be aching for some lightness. We all want to change the channel to 2021.  These words are often used to describe people, although we aren’t talking about weight, we are talking about something else.  We might even say, “He just has a heavy spirit.”

For Paul, when we understand the resurrection and the Spirit’s work in us, all of life, even the dark, heavy, earth-shattering stuff, becomes light.

Notice what he says in 2 Corinthians 4:17:

For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.

Light? Are you sure Paul? Paul has hitmen looking for him. Paul has become an outlaw in the most ruthless empire the world has ever seen who punishes it’s enemies with a cross. Paul has been shipwrecked. Paul has been abandoned. His word for all of this? It’s light. How? He knows his eternity. With Jesus, no matter what you are carrying, the yoke is easy and the burden is light.

Let us not feel unnecessary weight today. Let us walk through this moment and this year with a joyful spirit. Let us be light. We have an eternal glory that outweighs it all.
