Make Your Impact
Last Sunday, I had the privilege of preaching our church’s main message and I’m sure it’s no surprise to anyone that I took the opportunity to talk about living a life of service.
Or, in other words: Making Your Impact. Or, in The Church at RB speak… being good neighbors who go first.
My hope was to provide a little insight into the divine benefits of serving those around us while also reminding the church that whoever you are, you were designed by God to love others.
In addition to the benefits of serving others and the fact that we were created to do so, make no mistake friends – serving others is absolutely the call on your life if you claim to be a follower of Jesus.
I find that so freeing to think about. It means I don’t have to be confused about what God is calling me to or asking me to do in life. And neither do you. No matter where I am, what I’m thinking about, or how I’m feeling, my assignment, as a co-worker with God, is to enter into each day with the mindset of serving the people right in front of me.
His request of us is straightforward.
Summed up, it’s this: Love God, Love others. As it’s written in Mark 12:30-31, there is no commandment greater than this.
I love how Mother Teresa paraphrases God’s instruction to us in her quote about helping others. She says,
“Never worry about numbers. Help one person at a time and always start with the person nearest you."
But yet, somehow, while it appears to be simple and clear, we mess it up all the time, don’t we? We think first of ourselves, then maybe someone else, and typically resort to showing God we love Him only with the last of our energy.
Maybe it looks like going about your day thinking about what you’ll wear, eat, and do. Then maybe you give thought to your family, coworkers, and friends based on what you have to do that day. And typically last, when you inevitably face a challenge in your day, you might pull out the prayer card and give thanks to God.
I think God knew how hard it was going to be for each of us on a daily basis to serve those around us.
That’s why He literally talks about it throughout scripture again and again with examples, ideas, suggestions, and commands. It’s as if He knew we would need to hear it over and over again in different ways so that it could seep into our minds, our bodies, and our souls.
And again, it’s not just that God wants us to serve others because He says so. Yes, He does, BUT, He also knows that when we live life this way, thinking of others before ourselves, our lives will undoubtedly be better.
Helping those around you will help you get out of unhealthy thought patterns and on a more positive path forward.
Helping others will help you find more lasting joy which God desires for you to explore.
Helping others has also been scientifically proven to increase your health, memory, and lifespan.
And, helping others is a tool God has provided us with to make sense of this one life we have to live. To guide us in our day-to-day decisions.
Friends, making an impact in life isn’t just a fun slogan and it’s not just important to me because it’s my job title. Making your impact, being a good neighbor in action, or serving others – whatever you want to call it – is the best way to create a life of purpose, one day, and one person at a time.
