Picture Of A Disciple

The “Go First” series is teaching us what the life of a disciple of Jesus looks like in North County, San Diego in 2022.

The word “disciple” has been a familiar one to anyone who has been in church for a while. So what exactly is a disciple? Well, let’s take a broad look at the definition:

The standard definition of “disciple” (noun) is someone who lives by the teachings of another. It is a follower or a learner.

More importantly, a disciple is a worshiper.

Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth.

- John 4:23

There are a lot of things our culture worships. Status, achievements, moving up the corporate ladder, social media status (yes, I said it), politicians or sports personalities. Who, or what, we worship is shown in how, and where, we invest our time, talent, and treasure.

A disciple is a servant.

Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

- John 13:3-5

“Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you”

- John 13:14-15 (emphasis added)

Serving others seems so counter-cultural.

The goal in our world is to get to the place in our lives where others serve us. As Pastor Jared talked about during the Relational Connection message, we’re more concerned with transactional relationships. That’s not what Jesus wants for us. Ask yourself this question: How am I serving my spouse, family, friends, church and community?

Finally, a disciple points people to Jesus.

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

- Matthew 28:19-20 (emphasis added)

Pointing people to Jesus is the mirror our lives are to others. Yes, you and I are modern day disciples. People are watching every move we make. Sometimes they even “mirror” us! Emotional health, spiritual depth, relational connection, sexual wholeness, and purposeful vocation. Now that Pastor Jared has shared with us the blueprint for living a life as a disciple, what area(s) is God challenging you to do the work to be His physical body on earth, being a reflection of His love? We can do this friends! The good news is none of us are alone! We’re here to help one another grow together!

My life-long goal is to be a worshiper of Jesus by serving others and demonstrating His love by going first in every area of my life. Will you join me?

I know that 100 years from now we won’t be remembered for our accomplishments on earth, but for the love we gave away!

Pastor Pam
