Protector
Today, we’re looking at Psalm 91, one of my favorites.
The writer of the Psalm is speaking to Israel when they are going through a time of trouble. Let’s dive in and see what we can learn. Verses 1 and 2 say:
Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”
- Psalm 91:1-2
The Psalmist calls God “Most High” and “Almighty.” A.W. Tozer said, “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” What comes into your mind when you think about Him? Our view of God will determine our relationship with Him.
I’ll say that again: Our view of God will determine our relationship with Him.
Do you trust that He is a place of shelter and refuge? God is personal and strong! He invites us to find shelter and refuge in him. Verses 3-6 say:
Surely he will save you
from the fowler’s snare
and from the deadly pestilence.
He will cover you with his feathers,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
You will not fear the terror of night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
nor the plague that destroys at midday.
- Psalm 91: 3-6
God is our protector. We don’t have to be afraid. The expression “fear not” shows up 365 times in the Bible! In verses 7-13, we are reminded that God is always with us. He is with us through the good times and through the bad. There is nothing that we will experience that He doesn’t know about. He even sends angels to guard over us!
Finally, in verses 14-16, we learn that God is faithful. Verse 15 says:
He will call on me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble,
I will deliver him and honor him.
- Psalm 91:15
During a recent surgery, after the IV was inserted and I was being wheeled into the operating room, there was an element of discomfort… okay, maybe a little fear! That was when I started repeating all of the Bible verses I knew about fear and anxiety over and over. I felt a sense of peace and trust. God reminded me that fear confuses reality, amplifies things that are unreal. God was protecting me with great nurses and doctors!
God doesn’t promise that life will be perfect, but no matter what comes our way, He is a personal God with amazing strength. He is always with us and faithful to carry out the good work He began in each of us!
Have a great Tuesday!
