Psalm 112

Jul 28, 2023

When I was a new Christian and heard someone mention the word righteousness, it was pretty daunting.

Righteous is a word we use to characterize God, and so, it felt somewhat unattainable for me. Until I began to do a deep-dive on the word and learned that righteousness, or being righteous, simply means being in right standing with God; upright living. It is not perfection or doing things right all the time. Instead, it’s choosing to do your very best each day.

I love that righteousness is not something we have to strive for; instead, it is a gift given to us by God.

Last night, I had the privilege of being a guest at one of our table groups and we discussed this very thing: righteousness. 2 Corinthians 5:21 reminds us that in Jesus “we become the righteousness of God.” There’s an exchange that takes place when it comes to our righteousness -- Jesus gives it to us freely then we grab ahold of it and live it out! Psalm 112:1-7 reveals what’s in store for us when we are living righteously:

Praise the Lord.

Blessed are those who fear the Lord,

   who find great delight in his commands.

Their children will be mighty in the land;

   the generation of the upright will be blessed.

Wealth and riches are in their houses,

    and their righteousness endures forever.

Even in darkness light dawns for the upright,

   for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous.

Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely,

   who conduct their affairs with justice.

Surely the righteous will never be shaken;

   they will be remembered forever.

They will have no fear of bad news;

   their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord.

- Psalm 112:1-7

Family, righteousness removes fear and instills trust in our God. So, I want to pray for you that God helps you to walk in the righteousness that He’s given you.

Father, our hearts are filled with gratitude that You have made us righteous in You. Now give us the strength to walk in it. Help our righteousness be the barometer for which we trust You. Remove fear and doubt and replace it with Your peace and comfort. Help us to model upright living to our children so that generations long after us will be walking in faith and trusting in You. In your Mighty Name, Amen.
