Psalm 27
Over the past couple of weeks our nation has faced tragedy after tragedy with an influx of mass shootings from Buffalo, NY to Laguna Woods, and the Texas School shooting.
And if I could be fully transparent with you, I woke up feeling a little bit defeated today. My heart hurts, not only because innocent lives have been taken, but also because I see so much of me and my family in the lives lost in these tragedies. I have shared many times with my family and friends that, in today’s age, I feel that my only line of defense in a dark world is prayer.
I do trust that God is present, even now, and I have to continuously remind myself not to live in fear. What a great reminder David has given us in Psalm 27, which says this:
The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked advance against me to devour me, it is my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall. Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then I will be confident.
- Psalm 27:1-3
Amen and amen. I don’t know about you, but my heart needed to hear that today. And then I love what it says, picking up in verse 13:
I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.
- Psalm 27:13-14
Lord, that’s our prayer. We want Your presence to penetrate the dark parts of our world. We lift up the lives lost and the families affected in recent tragedies, and we ask for your comfort. Lord, help us to not live in fear, but to rest in knowing that our hope is in You. And in a world that seems to keep letting us down, may we know in our hearts that You never will.
Our strength is in You. Our Peace is in You. Our confidence is in You, Lord. In the Mighty Name of Jesus, Amen.
