Set A Fire

Sep 2, 2022

There is a song called Set a Fire by Will Regan. It goes like this:

Set a fire down in my soul

That I can't contain and I can't control

Cause I want more of you God

I want more of you God

I love this song because it is where I want my heart to be, even when I don't feel like it.

Friends, are you feeling numb? Are you feeling jaded? Are you feeling just blah? Do you long for the heart you had when you were younger… when you had that child-like faith? Do you miss those days when your heart would cry, "I WANT MORE OF YOU GOD?"

I do. These days, I find myself doing a lot of good things. A lot of worthy things, actually. But I pause and ask, is there fire in my heart for Jesus? Do I want more of God?

In Exodus 3, as we walk through the origin story of Moses, we find Moses in the wilderness. He was literally in a dry season of his life. Yet, God intervenes. God shows up in a burning bush that is on fire. The point is, he is saying to Moses, I can set your life on fire!

Exodus 3 says:

1 Meanwhile, Moses was shepherding the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian. He led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. 2 Then the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire within a bush. As Moses looked, he saw that the bush was on fire but was not consumed.

3 So Moses thought, "I must go over and look at this remarkable sight. Why isn't the bush burning up?"

- Exodus 3:1-3

Isn't it cool how God loves us in our wilderness times? Isn't it amazing how God shows up in our dry and mundane seasons of life?

Maybe, for you, it's your routine work life. You wake up, go to work, grind, then come home. For others, it's driving your kids to school, sports practice, cooking food, and doing laundry. Or perhaps, for you, everything externally is going well - you have a solid job, great family, cars, and houses - but for you, it's your spiritual life. It's as rough as the San Diego Padres! You try to read the Bible, play worship songs in your car, go to church on Sundays, and even listen to these daily devotionals, but you just don't feel like you used to. There is no fire.

Moses gives us a clue on how to baby-step out of this funk. Verse 3 says, "I must go over and look at this remarkable sight. Why isn't the bush burning up?"

Listen, God's fire never burns out. God can light up your life. He can set your heart ablaze for Him. Therefore, when your fire is low or burning out, you must make it a mandate to say, "I MUST GO OVER AND LOOK." And when you do, Jesus will light you up. Jesus will rekindle your heart. So that you can always go to Him and say, “I want more of you God! I want more! I want more!”

The song ends by proclaiming:

No place I would rather be

No place I would rather be

I want more of you God

I want more of you God

Maybe, for you today, the issue isn’t changing your job or your circumstance but it is to simply go to Jesus and ask, “Set a fire in my heart.” Then, perhaps, you too will sing, “There is no place I would rather be.”

True freedom is not about your location or vocation, but your heart on fire for Jesus wherever you are. Amen.
