Shadow Of His Wings
One of my favorite worship songs is entitled “Your Love Oh Lord” by Third Day.
Your love, oh Lord
Reaches to the heavens
Your faithfulness stretches to the sky
Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains
Your justice flows like the ocean's tide
I will lift my voice
To worship You, my King
I will find my strength
In the shadow of your wings
The words of this song are taken directly from Psalm 36. David begins in verses 1-4 by reflecting on the godlessness of the wicked and compares it to the goodness of God in verses 5-9. It was probably right after Saul or Absalom were trying to attack him. But rather than negatively reflect upon all of his troubles, he shifts his focus to the goodness of God. It reads:
Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies.
Your righteousness is like the highest mountains, your justice like the great deep.
You, Lord, preserve both people and animals.
How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings. They feast on the abundance of your house you give them drink from your river of delights. For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light.
- Psalm 36:5-9
Heavens, clouds, mountains, and the depth of the ocean are all breathtakingly beautiful pictures of God’s vastness and how LARGE His ability to save really is. Think about it! Look out at the expanse of the sky over the ocean. The giant thunderheads and crashes of lightning in the sky.
That is where our hope comes from… the vastness and greatness of our God! Today, let’s pause for a moment and “take refuge in the shadow of His wings.”
What does it mean to put your trust under the shadow of God’s wings? For me, I immediately think of my grandchildren. They don’t worry about putting food on the table or that they’ll have a roof over their heads. They know their parents will provide for them. So why do we become adults and spend so much time worrying? It doesn’t change our circumstances, it just makes us crazy!
We are adopted children of God, the creator of Heaven and Earth! There is nothing too big for Him to handle. There is nothing too tragic for Him to not provide comfort for us.
It’s when we come, weak and broken, like David in the Psalm, that we can find refuge and comfort in Him!
