Stronger Than The Seas

Psalm 93 is a short and sweet five sentences filled with affirmations of the majesty, strength, and might of our Lord.

The psalmist compares God’s vast strength to the thundering seas. Even the mightiest of waves don’t compare to the force of our God.

I went surfing for the first time in years a few weeks ago with my roommates. Decked out in an ill-fitting wetsuit carrying a gigantic, beginner foam surfboard, I ran into the waves looking about as experienced as someone who had never seen the ocean.

Despite being a beginner, we had a blast jumping through the water, watching the beautiful sunrise, and even standing up on a few waves. Toward the end of our excursion, I was feeling more confident and paddled a little farther out, determined to take on a larger wave and prove myself to the capable surfers just a few yards away.

I positioned myself perfectly, paddled as hard as I could, and as the massive wave came overhead I… completely wiped out. The force of this larger wave pummeled me immediately under water and what felt like minutes passed as the sea tossed me about. I finally came to the surface, seaweed in my hair, salt water in my nose, COMPLETELY disoriented.

I realized that my hand-me down wetsuit, beginner board, and overconfidence were no match for the powerful strength of the Pacific Ocean. It doesn’t take more than a few minutes in the water to feel the terrifying reality of how powerful and uncontrollable the ocean truly is.

In life, it’s easy to feel tossed about by the waves of the challenges we’re facing.

I don’t know about you, but some of the painful realities of my life and our world make me feel completely powerless. Like a tiny surfer being tossed about by gigantic waves, we can feel completely demolished by the problems we are up against.

However, Psalm 93 reminds us that our God is mightier than the largest waves.

He is stronger than the force of the sea. He is bigger than the problems we are up against. When it feels like we’re standing up against a towering wave of pain, His strength supports us, giving us the ability to find our way back up to air.

The waves may still leave us feeling disoriented, but when we rely on the strength of our Lord, He always pulls us back up to the surface.

Let’s take a minute to read through Psalm 93, and as you hear this short psalm, think of whatever wave is currently throwing you about. Let these words of our Father wash over you, and remind you that He is greater, He is stronger, and you are not alone.
