Think On These Things
There is something beautiful about a handwritten letter.
Years ago, my dad found a letter at our lake cottage miraculously still taped to the bottom of a step to the cellar. It had been written by my great-great-grandfather to my
great-great-grandmother during the Civil War, fought from 1861 to 1865. Grandpa talked about the fierce fighting and the intensity of shooting. He also talked about how much he longed for the war to end so he could be home. I can just imagine my great-great-grandmother holding it to her chest and, through tears, praying that he would return to her soon. It amazes me that the letter was in one piece, although yellowed and tattered, after so many decades had passed!
It was 2000 years ago that Paul wrote a letter to the church at Philippi. Thinking about that letter written in AD 61, it still is relevant for us today! In this fourth and final chapter of Paul’s letter, he thanks the church for their gifts and gives these closing words of encouragement. Let’s look at Philippians 4:4-9:
Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.

Remember, Paul is in a Roman prison. At a time when most people would be in despair, Paul tells us to rejoice! Each of these words written are to encourage the church and you and me. Paul reminds us that our circumstances do not have to control our inner thoughts and attitudes.
Focus on God! He promises to never leave us. He is with us in ALL things!!
When I think about that letter arriving to my great-great-grandmother, it must have brought her great joy. And yet, her husband was fighting in a war. There was no guarantee he would return to her. I don’t know for a fact, but I would imagine, knowing what I’ve heard about her faith, that she relied on the nearness of God. She, along with so many other wives, had to carry on with life at home, so there wasn’t time to sit in fear and anxiety. I wonder if she found peace in knowing that God would guard her heart and mind?
I don’t know what you are walking through today. But I do know this: God is with you!
He’s waiting to hear your requests and grant you peace. Get outside and look around at the beauty of creation. Fill your mind with what is right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent or praiseworthy!
