Today Matters

Aug 26, 2022

For most of my twenties and thirties, I asked the question, “God, what do you want me to do with my life?”

“Where do you want me to go?” I had major FOBO, which stands for fear of better options. I feared that what I was doing presently was not good enough. I always thought there must be something better out there. I was either comparing myself with others with “better” jobs or “cooler” opportunities. Have you ever felt that?

During this time, God taught me this: Your present faithfulness will lead you to your future purpose.

Moses, in Exodus 3, learned the same lesson. Here, we find Moses, who was in the desert as a shepherd for 40 years. Every single day, full time, he was shepherding animals. In that culture, this job didn’t earn respect, so I’m sure Moses had FOBO, the fear of better options. There must be something else I can do that’s better than this?! I mean, before this gig, forty years before, he was actually the prince of Egypt! Now, he was a prince of sheep.

Exodus 3:1-4 says:

Meanwhile, Moses was shepherding the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian. He led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. Then the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire within a bush. As Moses looked, he saw that the bush was on fire but was not consumed. So Moses thought, “I must go over and look at this remarkable sight. Why isn’t the bush burning up?”

When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called out to him from the bush, “Moses, Moses!”

“Here I am,” he answered.

Exodus 3:1-4

We will get deeper into this next week, but I want to point out one thing we need to commend Moses for. He was shepherding the flock of his father-in-law. For one, this was not his own flock, but his father-in-law’s! Talk about a pride killer. Not only that, he had been doing this for forty years. His daily faithfulness was a training ground where God prepared him for his purpose.

His present faithfulness led him to his future purpose.

Friends, whatever job or role you have right now in your life, whether it is staying at home or going out to work, it matters! It is not just a job. You are not just getting a paycheck. God is preparing you for a burning bush moment. God is setting you up for a greater purpose.

Now, this does not necessarily mean global impact or that everyone needs to go and be a missionary or give away thousands of dollars. God’s big purpose for your life could mean you are raising your kids; it could be faithfully being in a career for thirty years; it could be retiring well or serving the church regularly. So the point is your present faithfulness matters. Do not underestimate what daily mundane living for Jesus will do for your Kingdom impact.

Let’s pray.

Father God, I pray that as we go to our work today, we will be thankful that we are faithful. I pray that we will count Today as a spiritual win for waking up, working, and being faithful to our daily callings. Give us faith that you are preparing us to use us for your future purposes.

In Jesus name, Amen!
