Trust Issues

Dec 7, 2022

This morning in my time with the Lord, I was led to revisit Ephesians 5 which is a popular passage when it comes to living a life in light of God’s love.

A life that is pleasing to Him.

You see, I believe that one of the most challenging truths many believers struggle with is trusting that His way is better.

And I imagine it is a truth that many nonbelievers wrestle with, asking themselves, “Is God’s way really what’s best for my life? Are His plans truly abundantly better than anything I can imagine?” Well, I can testify to His goodness and confidently answer, “yes.” His ways truly are best. In fact, in John 14:6, Jesus is speaking saying,

“I am the Way, I am the Truth, and I am the Life. No one comes next to the Father except through union with me. To know me is to know my Father too.”

- John 14:6

We serve a God whose name is Truth, meaning He cannot lie.

It’s such a foreign concept to the human experience but that’s what makes Him God. You know, only 1/3 of Americans believe most people can be trusted. In other words, most of us have trust issues. But I have good news: we serve a God who is trustworthy. I love this quote from Jackie Hill Perry which says,

“If God is holy, then He can’t sin. If God can’t sin, then He can’t sin against you. If He can’t sin against you, shouldn’t that make Him the most trustworthy being there is?”

Absolutely!

So, how do we live a life trusting God?

1) We take Him at His word, and,

2) We believe that God is who He says He is!

Trust is not something that comes easy for many of us. We may have been hurt by people we trusted at some point; we may have dealt with betrayal, or deceit from friends or family.

But God’s nature is different than anything we’ve ever experienced or encountered. His trustworthiness is other-worldly.

And, through God’s power and our surrender, we get to experience the fullness of His love and care for us. Today, may you know that you serve a trustworthy, on-time, never-failing God who has your best interest at heart.

As you continue to reflect on Advent this year, be intentional about putting your trust in the most trustworthy being there is - Jesus.
