“I never lose an opportunity of urging a practical beginning, however small, for it is wonderful how often in such matters the mustard-seed germinates and roots itself.”

- Florence Nightingale

“The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.”

- Jesus, Matthew 13:31-32

Mustard seeds are but 1-2 millimeters in diameter, yet when planted and allowed to germinate, produce a tree that grows up to 30 feet tall with a 20-foot canopy. What began as something barely visible can grow to become a majestic tree where “birds come and perch in its branches.”

Such is the case with the smallest idea or effort on our part. It may seem insignificant and be barely visible to the world as a whole, but once that idea or effort is planted and allowed to germinate, it can change the landscape of our neighborhood, our community, or even the entire world.

YOU and I are mustard seeds in the greater cosmos, seemingly insignificant and barely visible to the world as a whole, but one idea or one ounce of effort can literally change the world.

Never sell yourself and your potential short. God made you and He has a plan for you, and whether that plan impacts the life of one, or of millions, it and you have value and purpose and significance.

The Apostle Paul writes in Ephesians 2:10,

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

Pastor Mark Batterson writes,

“I think faith is the small mustard seed of opportunities every day. For example, 'Am I going to love this person? Am I going to share my faith with this person? Am I going to pray that little prayer?' It really is a daily thing where you seize those little mustard seed opportunities and then see what God does.”

Take your idea or act of service, no matter how small… plant it, let it germinate, and watch what God can do.
