Called To Be Givers
“Peace comes from being able to contribute the best that we have, and all that we are, toward creating a world that supports everyone. But it is also securing the space for others to contribute the best they have and all that they are.”
- Hafsat Abiola
In the Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:29-37), the robber was a taker, the Priest and Levite were keepers, and the Samaritan was a giver.
As Christ followers, we are called to be givers, to recognize that what we claim as “ours” really belongs to God and is available for “His” use. Our time, our talent and abilities, and our treasure, all belong to God.
We are simply stewards of that which He has given us, ready to give it to others for their benefit. It is what a giver does.
“One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty.”
- Proverbs 11:24
“Give, and it will be given to you.”
- Luke 6:38
“God loves a cheerful giver.”
- 2 Corinthians 9:7
“When you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
- Matthew 6:3-4
“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me…”
- Matthew 25:35
“And now, brothers and sisters, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches. 2 In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability.”
- 2 Corinthians 8:1-3
“And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.”
- Hebrews 13:16
May we be generous in our giving of what God has given us, and in doing so, become the best we can be and help others become the best they can be.
