Daniel’s Prayer
“My faith does not rest in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.”
- 1 Corinthians 2:5
I must admit that I am not a person who has experienced dreams or visions from God. I know of people who have, and I am aware of how impactful they were for them, and even for others to whom the dream or vision impacted.
In Daniel 2, Daniel received a vision from God that revealed the meaning of King Nebuchadnezzar’s dream. Immediately after Daniel received the vision, the first thing he did was pray,
Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever;
wisdom and power are his.
He changes times and seasons;
he deposes kings and raises up others.
He gives wisdom to the wise
and knowledge to the discerning.
He reveals deep and hidden things;
he knows what lies in darkness,
and light dwells with him.
I thank and praise you, God of my ancestors:
You have given me wisdom and power,
you have made known to me what we asked of you,
you have made known to us the dream of the king.
- Daniel 2:20-23
Daniel recognized that whatever ability he had to do anything came directly from God, and first and foremost, it was his desire to praise God for His wisdom and His power.
Charles Spurgeon writes,
His wisdom is our direction, His knowledge is our instruction, His power our protection, His justice our surety, His love our comfort, His mercy our solace, And His immutability our trust.
I may not receive visions and dreams from God, but I do know this… regardless of what I am up against, I know the One to whom I need to turn to receive wisdom, power, love and mercy to face whatever lies before me.
Regardless of the challenge, I experience overwhelming peace and joy, because I know the God who is stronger than my problems.
