Do It Again!
“Why do you ask me about what is Good? There is only One who is Good…”
- Jesus, Matthew 19:17
“The two most important days in your life are the day you were born and the day you found out why.”
- Mark Twain
Two weeks ago, I watched Pastor Nate tossing his two daughters high up into the air and each time they landed they’d shout, “Do it again, Dad! Do it again!”…And he did…until he was totally spent. Whether from physical exhaustion or total monotony, it is impossible for us to do things endlessly, again and again. But not for God.
G.K. Chesterton writes,
“It is possible that God says every morning, “Do it again!” to the sun; and every evening, “Do it again!” to the moon. It may not be automatic necessity that makes all the daisies alike; it may be that God makes every daisy separately, but has never gotten tired of making them. It may be that He has the eternal appetite of a child; for we have sinned and grown old, but our Father is younger than we."
God is good because He is so generous! As Pastor Jared taught last week, the Greek word for “Goodness” is “Agathos,” which means giving someone more than they deserve - it is generosity.
The Bible is a story of extreme generosity. Think about it: Out of nothing, God gave us a world. And not just any old world…not a black and white mundane world…but a world of wonder, of color, of beauty.
God gave us life. But more than just life - He gave us love and laughter. He gave us food to eat, but not just treebark and soybeans. He gave us creme brulee and ice cream sandwiches. He gave us others in relationship. Not just people, but babies, children, family, friends...and dogs like Walter. And then, because we messed up what He gave us, He sent His only Son to fix what we broke!
And so it is that a child boils down the entire purpose of my life in a single prayer: “God is great! God is good! Let [me] thank Him…for everything!” Amen.
