Don’t Let Me Go
Ken and I have just finished watching the third season of “The Chosen.”
I’m not much into “cheesy” Christian television, but I have been really impressed with the quality and production of this series. So much so that we would watch two to three episodes a night. I highly recommend you take the time to watch it! While the writer takes some creative license, the essence of the series is true to Scripture.
Do you remember the story of Jesus walking on the water?
He had just finished feeding the 5,000 and wanted some time alone to pray, so he told the disciples to take the boat to the other side of the Sea of Galilee and He would join them later. Let’s begin in Matthew 14:25:
Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”
“Come,” he said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
- Matthew 14:25-33 (emphasis added)
“Lord, save me!” The writers of “The Chosen” show Peter sobbing, clinging to Jesus’ leg crying: “Don’t let me go! Don’t let me go!”
I can’t seem to get those words out of my mind. “Lord, save me! Don’t let me go!”
There have certainly been times in my life when I’ve desperately clung to Jesus and begged, “Don’t let me go!” When my sister was killed, when Ken was diagnosed with cancer, when our children have faced challenges, when I’ve felt like giving up on life. It was just too hard on my own - I begged Jesus to not let go!
Have you found yourself or someone you love in a similar situation? When nothing seems to be making sense in your marriage, your job or in your friendships? When you’ve just hung up the phone from your doctor learning the cancer is inoperable?
Friends, cling to Jesus! It was when Peter took his eyes OFF of Jesus that he began to sink. Keep your eyes on Jesus, keep walking towards Him and I guarantee He’ll never let you go!
