Giant Killers

If God puts a Goliath in front of you, He must believe there’s a David inside of you.

- Unknown

34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, 35 I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. 36 Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. 37 The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.”

- 1 Samuel 17:34-37

I love this passage! When the army of Israel is challenged to send someone to fight the giant, Goliath, it is young David, who just arrived from the pasture where he was watching his family’s sheep. It’s the kid who says, “I’ll do it; I’ll fight him,” to which King Saul replies, “You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a young man, and he has been a warrior from his youth.”

How many naysayers have you come across in your life? How many have said to you, “You can’t do that! You’re not strong enough! You’re not good enough!?”

Yet here is young David, still wet behind the ears, who stands up before the King of Israel and its entire army, and says, “I can do it!” Why? And this is where we need to read closely...

When David first starts out, he makes it sound like this is all him: Look what I have done… I have killed lions and I have killed bears, so this Philistine does not scare me. But, pay close attention to how David concludes his argument, “The LORD who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.”

Sure, we’ve faced doubters and naysayers, and it will continue to happen, but our confidence to rise above, to be overcomers, to be Giant Killers, does not come from our own abilities or even by developing a stronger will.

It is because, like David, we have chosen to place our trust in the One who can overcome anything and defeat every giant in our path.

So, next time you face a giant, don’t say, “I can do this of my own strength; I got this.” You may just prove the naysayers correct.

Instead, let your words be, “The Lord will give me the strength to overcome. Because of Him, I can slay this Giant.”

“He’s got this!” Because He does!
