“Only God is great. The rest of us should be content to simply fulfill the duties with which He has blessed us.”

- Mark J. Musser

And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.

- The Apostle Paul, 2 Corinthians 9:8

Though more than 30 years have passed, I still remember clearly our discussion in my college microeconomics class on the Law of Diminishing Returns. As young men and women, we argued that there were certain things that we would never grow tired of – that would never diminish in value. Money, of course, was at the top of the list. There was absolutely no way money would have diminishing returns. When John D Rockefeller was asked, “How much money was enough?” His answer, “Just a little bit more.”

For me, it wasn’t just about money. My first thought was, “I dare you to put a bowl of ice cream in front of me. I will show you that the Law of Diminishing Returns does not exist.

However, as I have gotten older and wiser, it has become easy to see that God’s math is so much better than mine. I’ve also learned that too much ice cream not only has diminishing returns, but far worse repercussions.

God’s law is a law of enough, promising to bless us with what we need to fulfill our purpose of worshipping and glorifying Him, and making eternal deposits in the lives of others.

Pastor Jared referred to Gideon in the Bible (Judges 6-8), who pleaded with God to help the Israelites defeat the Midianites, but God told him, “You have too many men.” God knew that with more than enough men, the Israelites would think they had defeated the Midianites by their own strength and power. So, God reduced the number of men from 32,000 to 300, and with those 300 men, God led them in victory over the Midianites.

Like us, what the Israelites needed was less of themselves and more of God.

We don’t need more money or power; we need more of God. When we trust in His strength, His blessings and His power, we can accomplish more than we could have ever imagined. We are More Than Conquerors through Christ who loves us.
