It’s Enough
"And He said unto me, 'My grace is sufficient for you; for my strength is made perfect in your weakness."
- Jesus, 2 Corinthians 12:9
"Enough is as good as a feast."
- Mary Poppins
Jesus said that His grace is all we need… that nothing more needs to be added to the gift He gave us from the cross that put you and I in a personal relationship with the Lord God of Heaven and Earth.
His grace alone… the gift we did not deserve… the forgiveness of sin that Jesus purchased for us on Calvary... is enough!
You know… it's rare to find something that is in itself enough. Don't we always find the need to add… uhhh… a personal touch… something of our own to spice it up… to make it better. I know a fella who just bought a brand new top-of-the-line Harley Davidson… and the first thing he did was change the pipes, the lights and the seat. "What in the world are you doing?" I exclaimed..."The bike was perfect as it was!" "Oh no!" He replied… "I had to make it mine!" Whether it's a seasoning or a drop of this or a touch of that, almost everything needs something more than just itself. Even your spouse… even your friend could use just a touch of something more... right? Uh-oh… better not go there! (Smile).
So it's rare… really rare… when you see something… or experience something… or hear something… or read something… or feel something… and say, "That's enough! Nothing more is needed!" Those of you who know me realize then how much more rare it must be for someone like me, who always feels the need to expand… to expound… to elaborate… to explain… to do nothing. To just let a scripture be, and to say, "That's enough… nothing more needs to be said."
Which is why, today, I want to offer you a Psalm. If you look up Psalm 16 in my Bible, you'll see written above it, in my handwriting, the notation, "My Favorite Psalm." I offer you this Psalm without any personal musings or reflections as to its meaning or significance… because, to me, like God's Grace, it's enough, just as it is. It needs nothing more. It speaks to me just as it is… without knowing its history, its context, its etymology, its theology, it leaves my heart grateful, my mind peaceful, my soul full and my body calm. I pray it does for you as well. So, I give you my favorite Psalm… Psalm 16:
Keep me safe, O God,
for I have come to you for Refuge.
I said to the LORD, 'You are my King!
Every good thing I have comes from You."
The godly people in the land
are my true heroes!
I take pleasure in them!
Troubles multiply for those who chase after
other gods.
I will not take part in their sacrifices
or even speak the names of their gods.
LORD, You alone are my inheritance, my cup
of Blessing.
You guard all that is mine.
The land You have given me is a pleasant land.
What a wonderful inheritance!
I will Bless the LORD who guides me;
even at night my heart instructs me.
I know the LORD is always with me.
I will not be shaken, for He is right
beside me.
No wonder my heart is glad, and I rejoice.
My body rests in safety.
For You will not leave my soul among
the dead
or allow Your Holy One to rot in the
grave.
You will show me the way of life,
granting me the Joy of Your Presence
And the pleasures of living with You forever!
AMEN
