On Earth As It Is In Heaven
Yesterday we launched our new series . As Pastor Jared put it, “You are forever you, for better or for worse.” Forever You
He talked about us beginning the work of becoming the person God created and desires us to be. Often it comes down to our motivation. The Apostle Paul writes in Philippians 2,
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
Philippians 2:3-4
Several years ago, Pam and I wrote and published a book on marriage. People would ask us, “Why did you write it? Are you hoping to sell a lot of copies?” Our answer, “We wrote it because we sensed God leading us to do so to help couples have stronger marriages.” It was never about making money (good thing), but about making a difference in the lives of others. We don’t have it all figured out, but whatever we can do to help others is a step in the right direction.
When Jesus prayed, “Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven,” He was asking God to work in each of us to make earth a little more like Heaven – to take a step in the right direction.
We do so by loving God and living for the good of others. It does not happen quickly and there will be more than a fair share of bumps in the road, and even some detours along the way. But, when we set out on the journey, it expresses our love for God and we are beginning the process of becoming a better Forever You.
