Sometimes He Calms The Storm
Life would be so much better if God would only remove the turbulence. Right?!
If only I had not lost my job; if only I had not been diagnosed with cancer; if only I had not lost my loved one; if only my spouse had not left me…
A number of years ago, Scott Krippayne recorded a song:
All who sail the sea of faith
Find out before too long
How quickly blue skies can grow dark
And gentle winds grow strong
Suddenly fear is like white water
Pounding on the soul
Still we sail on knowing
That our Lord is in control
Sometimes He calms the storm
With a whispered peace be still
He can settle any sea
But it doesn't mean He will
Sometimes He holds us close
And lets the wind and waves go wild
Sometimes He calms the storm
And other times He calms His child.
- Sometimes He Calms The Storm
These words come straight from Scripture. In Mark 4:39, Jesus was asleep in a boat with His disciples and a violent storm began to rage on the Sea of Galilee. The disciples were afraid and thought Jesus had abandoned them in their time of need. Instead, He awoke and said to the waves, “Peace. Be still.” Instantly, the winds ceased and the sea became calm.
Wouldn’t it be great if Jesus calmed every storm in our life like that? But, as Pastor Jared taught us this past Sunday, sometimes the greatest miracle Jesus does is not to calm the storm, but to calm His child in the midst of the storm. In Philippians 4:7, Paul writes,
“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Through calming His child, God transforms us to become more like Him, preparing us for eternity.
The song I shared earlier concludes with these words:
He has a reason to allow each trial
That we pass through in life
And though we're shaken
We cannot be pulled apart from Christ
No matter how the driving rain beats down
On those who hold to faith
A heart of trust will always
Be a quiet peaceful place
Today and every day, may the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
