The Blood Of Jesus
“When Jesus Christ shed His blood on the cross, it was not the blood of a martyr; or the blood of one man for another; it was the life of God poured out to redeem the world.”
- Oswald Chambers
What can wash away my sins? Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
What can make me whole again? Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
Nothing can for sin atone, Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
Naught of good that I have done, Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
- Robert Lowry, 1876
In the Old Testament, once a year, the High Priest carried blood into the Holy of Holies of the Tabernacle in order to atone for the sins of the people. It was a precursor of things to come; for when Jesus would enter the world and give His life on the cross, the writer of Hebrews tells us in Hebrews:
But when Christ came as High Priest...He went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not made with human hands...He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but He entered the Most Holy Place once for all by His own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption.
- Hebrews 9:11-12
Nor did He enter heaven to offer Himself again and again, the way the High Priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own. Otherwise Christ would have to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But He has appeared once for all at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of Himself.
- Hebrews 9:25-26
Every time I read and reflect on passages like this, I realize I do not and cannot grasp the depth of what Jesus did for me. There is nothing I can do to pay the penalty for my sins. I am destined for death and eternal separation from God. But because of God’s unconditional love and amazing grace, and the willing sacrifice of Jesus Christ our Lord, my sins are atoned for, they are washed away, and I am made whole. Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
Lord, make my life a living example of one who reflects the love of Jesus and shines for all to see, that they too may have the privilege of entering into a relationship with the living God.
