This Is My Father’s World
“The kingdom of God is like a mustard seed, beginning as the smallest of seeds but growing until the birds of the air make their nests therein. There are old worlds and new ones. There are earthly worlds and cyber worlds. But one truth remains the same now and forever, that Jesus rules them all.”
- R.C. Sproul, Jr.
“The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they reveal knowledge.
They have no speech, they use no words;
no sound is heard from them.
Yet their voice goes out into all the earth,
their words to the ends of the world.
In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun.”
- King David, Psalm 19:1-4
In the beginning, the earth was formless and empty, but God spoke and, from nothing, light, and sky, and land, and plants, and animals, and ultimately humans, appeared. From the invisible came the visible, from nothing came everything.
As Dr. Sproul wrote… God’s kingdom is like a mustard seed, beginning small (empty and void), yet ultimately growing and becoming a beautiful reflection of His majesty and power, a Creation that declares the glory of God.
We are the culmination of that creation, created in God’s image, with small beginnings, as Adam was formed from the dust of the ground.
Our purpose on this earth, like all of Creation, is to declare the glory of God and proclaim the work of His hands.
The old hymn, “This is my Father’s World,” says it so beautifully:
This is my Father's world
And to my listening ears
All nature sings, and round me rings
The music of the spheres
This is my Father's world
The birds their carols raise
The morning light, the lily white
Declare their Maker's praise
This is my Father's world
I rest me in the thought
Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas
His hand the wonders wrought
This is my Father's world
Oh, let me never forget
That though the wrong seems oft so strong
God is the ruler yet
This is my Father's world
Why should my heart be sad?
The Lord is King, let the heavens ring
God reigns, let the earth be glad
This is my Father's world
He shines in all that's fair
In the rustling grass, I hear Him pass
He speaks to me everywhere
May we be a beautiful expression of God’s Creation, declaring His glory and proclaiming the work of His hands.
